Topi is a town in Swabi District of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa of Pakistan. The town, located in the east of the district,[1] is administratively subdivided into two Union councils: Topi East and Topi West.[4]

Geography

Topi is located west of the Tarbela Dam, the world's largest earth filled dam.[5][6] Tarbela Dam is the largest hydroelectric generation project in Pakistan, producing 3,495 megawatts of electricity accounting for 40 percent of the Water and Power Development Authority's total power output as of 1980.[5]

Subdivision and politics

Topi is split between two union councils, Topi (East) and Topi (West). Topi is further divided into Alizai, Akazai and Kanazai. Alizai comprises Mohallah Booba Khel, Botakha, Punj Pao, Ismail Khel and Suma Khel. Akazai comprises Mohallah Urr Ibrahim, Khadar Khan Khel, Painda Khel, Sabi Khel, Pir Azghi and Niki Khel. Kanazi comprises Mohallah Musa Khel,which split into two Cham (Dobyano Cham and Mero Cham), Bara Khel, Sana Khel,Ghulam Khel,Muhammad Khan Khel and Mattona.

Education sector

The town of Topi is home of the Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology (GIKI), named after Ghulam Ishaq Khan, a former President of Pakistan.[7] There is a Government High School for boys and one Higher Secondary School for girls. There are also several private schools, such as Tameer e Millat Public School, Sublime Public School, Moonlight School and College, Awan Public School, Sarhad Public School, Utman Public School, and Shaheen Public School.

Sports

Makha is the traditional game of Swabi. Makha is a shooting game using a bow and arrow. The arrow has a flat dish-shaped head. Different villages compete against each other.

Notable residents

Topi is the birthplace of Nawab Sir Sahibzada Abdul Qayyum Khan, a pioneer of modern education in the Province. He founded and donated the land for Islamia College Peshawar in 1913 and Government High School Topi in 1935.
